Women's Basketball Downed by West Virginia State on Wednesday

ELKINS, W.Va. -- West Virginia State handed Davis & Elkins a 95-70 loss on Wednesday's senior night matchup at the McDonnell Center.

Allie Taylor led the way for the Senators (2-12) with a career-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Jamiyah Johnson had a double-double with 13 points and 18 rebounds.

Five players reached double figures on the night for WVSU, led by 19 points from Destiny Fields. Fields also had eight rebounds. Alana Kramer scored 16 points, Kalia Cunningham added 13 and Chloe Cheresne netted 11. Shelby Harmeyer chipped in 10.

Davis & Elkins did better in limiting the Yellow Jackets from beyond the arc, surrendering eight triples as compared to 20 in the first meeting. The up-tempo Yellow Jackets still tossed up 20 more shots from the field than the Senators and held a decisive 45-10 edge in points of turnovers.

The seniors began the scoring for Davis & Elkins with a three from Jessica Eadsforth-Yates and a bucket from Johnson that tied the score at five.

A 7-0 burst for the visitors placed them ahead 12-7, but D&E stayed within striking distance. Taylor sunk a pair of foul shots to bring D&E back to within three at 16-13 before the Yellow Jackets answered with another run.

Back-to-back triples keyed an 8-0 West Virginia State run to start the second as the lead swelled to 14 at 32-18. Taylor hit consecutive three-pointers of her own, both coming off passes from Brooklyn Maxwell, to chop the Senator deficit to eight points at 32-24 with 7:54 left in the half.

Shelby Harmeyer responded with a dagger three with 7:17 left in the opening half, ballooning the Yellow Jackets' margin back to double digits at 35-24. The Senators were unable to chip away as the visitors continued the pressure on both sides of the floor.

Peyton Mohler dropped in a season-high 13 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and a steal for D&E.

Wednesday's fourth consecutive loss - coupled with a win for West Virginia Wesleyan against Concord - eliminated Davis & Elkins from contention for a spot in the upcoming MEC Tournament.

Davis & Elkins will play West Virginia Wesleyan in the season finale on Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 PM.
