ELKINS, W.Va. – In a choppy matchup, Davis & Elkins women's basketball fell to West Virginia Wesleyan, 68-57, on Wednesday night inside the McDonnell Center.
Davis & Elkins falls to 2-9 on the season and West Virginia State moved to 3-8 following Wednesday's matchup. Senior forward
Jamiyah Johnson returned to the lineup with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Jessica Eadsforth-Yates poured in 11 points with five assists and
Peyton Mohler posted 10 points.
Abi Gabauer had a game-high 25 points to lead the Bobcats, recording 11 rebounds in 35 minutes off the bench. Malaika Kimmons and Cierra Tolbert notched 10 points each and Brittany Stawovy added seven markers and five blocks.
Both sides struggled to get going offensively in the opening 20 minutes as West Virginia Wesleyan held a 34-30 lead at the intermission. The Senators scored their first points on a Taylor foul shot with 7:41 showing in the first quarter.
Johnson answered a Bryant-Brown jump shot with a bucket of her own before Eadsforth-Yates knotted the score at six with a three-pointer at 5:27.
Marissa Berlin cashed in on the low block to push D&E ahead 10-9 and
Allie Taylor pushed it to 13-9 around 40 seconds later.
The Bobcats answered with a little rally to tie things at 13 and Gabauer hit a trey with just three ticks left on the first half clock. D&E held a 22-14 edge in the paint over the first 20 minutes, while the Bobcats took a 13-4 margin in bench points into the locker room.
WVWC kept the lead throughout the third quarter hovering around six points and pushed the advantage to double digits for much of the fourth.
Davis & Elkins is back on the court Saturday, February 13 for a road clash at Concord beginning at 2:00 PM.
