ELKINS, W.Va. - Davis & Elkins women's basketball fell behind early and could not answer a hot-shooting Fairmont State unit in a 100-60 loss on Monday evening. Senior forward
Jamiyah Johnson converted an and-one foul shot to net her 1,000th-career point, becoming the 23rd player in program history to do so.
Davis & Elkins (1-5) was paced by Johnson, who recorded a 24-point, 18-rebound double-double.
Peyton Mohler chipped in eight points and added four rebounds and three steals, while
Sydney Nestor and
Reagan Sharp had six points each.
The Senators committed 27 turnovers in the game, postponed from January 10 to January 25. Fairmont State (2-4) stormed out of the gate with a 49-12 run over a 14-minute span in the opening half to build a comfortable cushion against the Senators.
Sierra Kotchman led five Falcons in double digits with a game-high 28 points, adding two rebounds, six assists and two steals. Jalen Gibbs and Alyssa DeAngelo posted 17 points each and Katy Darnell notched 13 markers.
The Senators shot the ball at just a 32.4% clip in the first half, while the Falcons went 53.7% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Davis & Elkins had a turnover-plagued opening quarter and Fairmont State made the most of them with 19 points off the 12 miscues. Nestor canned a jumper for a 4-3 lead, but it was all Fairmont State the rest of the way.
The Senators found a bit of an offensive groove with a 6-0 spurt in the final few minutes of the third, including the Senators' first three-pointer of the evening from
Amiah Banks at the 1:34 mark. D&E outscored the Falcons, 23-13, in the third period.
Fairmont responded with seven of the first 11 points of the fourth to maintain its margin as D&E ran out of time to chip away.
Davis & Elkins returns to road action on Wednesday, January 27, against Alderson Broaddus, with tipoff slated for 5:00 PM.
