GLENVILLE, W.Va. - While tied at halftime, Davis & Elkins was outscored 48-16 in the third quarter in a 123-82 road defeat to Glenville State on Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference (MEC) action.
Davis & Elkins (0-2, 0-2 MEC), playing for the first time since January 7, was paced by
Jamiyah Johnson's 16 point, 13 rebound double-double. Johnson, who secured her double-double before halftime, went 8-of-9 from the floor and added a pair of steals.
Glenville State (2-1, 2-1 MEC) placed five players in double figures, including a game-high 20 points from Mashayla Cecil. Taychaun Hubbard and Zakiah Winfield posted 19 points each, while Dazha Congleton added 12 points of her own.
Amiah Banks finished with 14 points, two rebounds and three assists in 19 minutes, while
Brooklyn Maxwell added 11 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Senators. In total, 11 players found the scoresheet for Davis & Elkins.
GSC attempted 22 more shots from the floor than the Senators, finishing 43-of-90 from the field. D&E went 37-of-68 (54.4%) from the field, but just 2-of-4 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Glenville hit 19 three-pointers and held a 48-15 edge in points off turnovers.
While the Pioneers distanced themselves in the second half, the teams raced up and down the court in the opening 20 minutes. D&E took its first lead of the evening on a Maxwell jumper at 7:24 in the first quarter. A quick 6-0 spurt lifted D&E ahead by four at 14-10 and another 6-0 stretch to begin the second quarter moved D&E in front, 33-30.
Jessica Eadsforth-Yates canned a trey ball off a dish from Taylor at 3:51 and Maxwell hit a jumper that made the score 44-42 with 1:53 remaining in the opening half. Two buckets in the final minute of the first half for Johnson tied the score at 48 before
Allie Taylor hesitated and scored to push the Senators ahead by two at 50-48. GSC answered on its next trip up the floor to tie the score at 50 heading into the halftime locker room.
The first half went back and forth, featuring eight ties and 13 lead changes. D&E got off to a much better start offensively on Wednesday, shooting nearly 74% from the floor in the first quarter.
Glenville State took charge in the second half, taking the lead on a Mashayla Cecil three-pointer with nine minutes left in the third. The Pioneers didn't look back, converting 17 field goal attempts in the third period, shooting over 70% from the field and 66.7% from beyond the arc in the 10-minute stretch.
Davis & Elkins is back home on Saturday, January 16 to take on Concord from the McDonnell Center at 2:00 PM.
