GLENVILLE, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins baseball finished its opening weekend with a 3-0 record, concluding the games at Glenville with a 6-2 win over Ohio Valley on Saturday and a hard-fought 6-4 triumph against ninth-ranked Mercyhurst on Sunday.
Sunday's win against Mercyhurst came in dramatic fashion as the Senators scored five runs over the final two innings, including two in the ninth to take the lead.
Marcos Feria was able to hold off the Lakers in the bottom of the ninth, getting a timely double play with the bases loaded to seal the victory.
Offense was difficult to come by in the early portions of the game for D&E, which plated just one run in the first seven innings as John Acaro raced home on a wild pitch in the third.
The D&E pitching staff kept the squad within striking distance with Mercyhurst holding a 4-1 lead through seven.
Chase DeGrood hammered a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right, scoring
Tanner Wickham and
Justin Worley to tie the game at four.
Davis & Elkins took advantage of Mercyhurst miscues in the ninth as
Troy McMillion scored on an error for the go-ahead run and
Justin Worley added the insurance marker after scoring on a passed ball.
The D&E pitching staff of
Marcos Feria,
Justin Sutta and
Jeremy Torres combined to keep the high-powered Lakers at bay. Feria fired four strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs in 5.2 innings of work before giving way to Sutta.
Stats for the game against Ohio Valley were not available at the time of release.
