KEY SEQUENCE
  • A service ace from Mya Mitschenko proved to be the difference in an extended third set, which Davis & Elkins won 30-28 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. With their backs against the wall, Georgian Court caught fire and rallied to take the fourth and fifth sets, sending the Senators to 0-2 on the year in deflating fashion.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Opening swings from Mya Mitschenko, Kaitlyn LaCour and Lillie Mueller helped Davis & Elkins open the match with a 9-4 lead. GCU stormed back with the next five points to tie the frame and D&E moved back in front with some key offensive attacks along the outside for a 17-12 advantage. A 7-1 run by the Senators, finalized by kills from Jessa Henry and Mueller, made it 24-17. Despite a last-ditch effort from GCU, Luann O'Kane handed the Senators the opening-set victory with a kill off a fed from Kelly Smith.
  • The score was reversed in the second set, with Georgian Court emerging victorious with a 25-20 victory. Close throughout, GCU reeled off a 10-4 run with the score tied at 12 to pull away.
  • Leading 12-9 off a service ace, Georgian Court seemed to have the momentum, but Davis & Elkins answered with a 6-2 run to regain the lead. Mitschenko posted an ace and kill in the surge before GCU sliced into the lead with five straight points. A 6-0 surge put D&E up two, 24-22, and the Senators ultimately recorded six of the final nine points for the lengthy set victory. Mitschenko sealed the set with another service ace, one of two on the afternoon.
  • Georgian Court slowly pulled away in the second half of the fourth set, winning 25-17 and continued the strong play in the fifth with a 15-11 victory.

KEY SEQUENCE
  • After coming up just short in the first two matches of 2019, Davis & Elkins rebounded in a big way with a 3-0 sweep to close out the VSU Invitational on Saturday. After taking an extended first set, Davis & Elkins fired off an 8-1 outburst in the second set for a convincing 17-8 lead with kills from Warren, Mitschenko, LaCour and O'Kane. The all-around effort helped D&E take a 2-0 lead before the Senators finalized the sweep in the next set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing throughout much of the first set, Davis & Elkins needed a 6-0 run to win it 26-24. LaCour fired in three kills in the final run, while Raleighanne Waever added one.
  • Waver laced two more kills after the big run for D&E in the second set for a 19-10 edge. Virginia State attempted to rally, but the Senators had just enough of a cushion to hold on for a 25-18 set two win.
  • Aces from Mueller and Mintschenko helped the Senators forge ahead 6-4 in the third set. Four straight points, included a pair of VSU errors, made it 10-5 before the hosts made one last charge. Slicing the D&E lead to 12-11, Virginia State worked its way back into the third set, but the Senators responded with six of the next eight points for an 18-13 lead.
  • Mitschenko capped the sweep with a kill for a 25-22 victory.
