GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • After a strong start, the host Vulcans took control and ultimately won each of the last three sets for a 3-1 victory over D&E on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal U opened the first set with an 8-2 advantage, but a quick 4-0 run that included two service aces from Kaitlyn LaCour, made it a 9-7 game. D&E tied the set at 10 and 14, ultimately taking a 16-14 edge to force a Vulcan timeout. A kill from Lillie Mueller and ace from Luann O'Kane pushed the Senators to a 21-17 lead, and Davis & Elkins emerged with the set win following two errors from the Vulcans.
  • Raleighanne Weaver recorded consecutive kills to tie the second set at five, but the Vulcans countered back and extended their lead to 12-5. Mueller brought the Senators to within 16-9 with a kill, but Cal U proved to be too much, collecting five of the final six points in the frame to tie the match at one.
  • LaCour led the Senators to a 4-0 lead with three kills to begin the third set. Davis & Elkins extended the advantage to 8-4 before the Vulcans took a 9-8 lead with a run. Both sides kept the score close throughout the middle and latter portions of set three. The Vulcans opened up a four-point edge at 23-19 before pulling away for the 25-20 set win.
  • O'Kane and LaCour recorded kills early in the fourth set, pushing the Senators to a 5-3 lead. Cal U answered with the next four points to regain the edge at 7-5 and force a D&E timeout. The Vulcans held a narrow lead before Mueller tied the set at 12 with an ace, and the Senators rallied to tie the set again at 13 and 14. Davis & Elkins pulled in front briefly at 19-18 following a kill from Mueller and tied the set at 22 with a LaCour kill. California capped the match with a 25-23 set win on a D&E service error.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • Trailing 2-1, it looked like Davis & Elkins may leave the first day of the Vulcan Invitational with some disappointing results. Kaitlyn LaCour, who notched the first match of her career with 20 or more kills, ensured a fifth set with three consecutive strikes to end the fourth frame. Davis & Elkins kept it close in the fifth set and notched each of the final two points off IUP attack errors to complete the comeback win over the Crimson Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two sides went back and forth to open the match and LaCour delivered a kill as Davis & Elkins trailed 8-7. Mya Mintschenko tied the set at nine with a kill, but the Senators trailed slightly until Cynthia Arango tied the score at 18 with an ace. LaCour smacked a kill to tie the score at 20 and Davis & Elkins ultimately emerged victorious in a competitive first set.
  • IUP responded back in a flurry, taking the next two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-16 for a 2-1 match lead. The Senators held an early lead in the third set after an ace from Mintshenko (7-4) and kill from LaCour (8-6), but the Crimson Hawks pulled ahead 9-8 and did not trail for the remainder of the set.
  • Consecutive kills from Weaver highlighted an early run in the fourth set that pushed Davis & Elkins ahead 9-5. Solei Daniels pushed the Senators ahead 11-6 with a strike, but IUP again climbed out of a hole to move in front 16-15. Back-to-back service aces from Kelly Smith tied the set at 19 and LaCour ended the frame with three consecutive kills for the 25-23 victory.
  • Trailing 6-3 in the fifth set, Davis & Elkins worked its way to an 8-7 lead off a kill from LaCour. An ace from Cynthia Arango lifted the Senators in front, 11-8, but the Crimson Hawks would not go quietly as they tied the set at 14. IUP had two attack errors to end the match, handing the Senators the extended 16-14 set win.
