KEY SEQUENCE
  • Trading blows throughout the contest, neither team could gain enough traction offensively to separate themselves. This back-and-forth trend continued into a match-deciding fifth set, where Shepherd picked up three of the final four points on the day, allowing the Rams to escape with a 3-2 win on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kills from Kaitlyn LaCour and Sarah Warren highlighted an opening 5-2 surge in the first set for Davis & Elkins. Shepherd worked its way back, reeling off back-to-back service aces for a 12-8 advantage, and capped the opening set with a 7-1 run for the early lead.
  • Aces from Kelly Smith and Mya Mintschenko, along with five errors from the Rams, pushed Davis & Elkins in front 7-3 in the second set. The Rams battled back to tie the set at 11, but Davis & Elkins was able to maintain a lead from that point, taking set two by a 25-17 margin.
  • Shepherd stormed out of the gate in the third set for an 8-1 lead and the Senators never worked their way to within five or less for the remainder of the set.
  • Davis & Elkins ensured an early lead in the fourth set, with kills from Essence West and LaCour handing the Senators a quick 2-1 advantage. The Senators jumped in front with a 6-1 run, again bookended with kills from LaCour and West, for a 10-6 lead. Jessa Henry dropped in a service ace for a 14-9 lead, but the Rams roared back with the next seven points for a 16-14 lead. The Senators countered back yet again with the next five points before closing the set with the final five points for the 25-19 victory.
  • Down 5-1 in the match-deciding fifth set, Davis & Elkins had one final charge. Kills by Mitschenko and LaCour lifted D&E in front 9-7 before a big swing from West knotted the score at 12. Henry launched a service ace for a 15-14 lead and both sides staved off match point a combined for times before the Rams eventually won the set 19-17.
