KEY SEQUENCE
  • Despite each team using some big runs throughout the match, neither side gained much separation at the end of all four sets. West Virginia State recorded back-to-back kills to end the third set to take a 2-1 match lead, and the visitors were able to cap the match with in the next set by the same margin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Senators struggled early in the first set as West Virginia State got out to 6-1 lead before having to burn a timeout. A block by Raleighanne Weaver proved to be a momentum shifter as the Senators cut into the deficit. Following a WV State timeout late in the first set, the Senators came out storming, and ultimately took set one 25-23 off the strong attack of Kaitlyn LaCour. LaCour finished the first set with nine kills, while Lillie Mueller chipped in with three in the opening set.
  • In the second set both teams battled it out close early on. Much of the same play continued through the latter half of the set as neither team was able to gain a significant lead. Following a timeout by the Senators, West Virginia State managed to grab the last two points in the set to even things out in the match at 1-1.
  • Davis & Elkins rolled to a 14-6 lead to start the third set, with kills coming from LaCour, Weaver and Mya Mintschenko in the run. West Virginia State responded back, recovering from the deficit to keep things close the rest of the set. Once again West Virginia State grabbed the last two points in the set after being tied at 23-23 to take set three.
  • Much of the same play continued into the fourth set as both teams traded points in an up-tempo fourth set. A 5-1 run in the middle of the frame catapulted the Yellow Jackets back in front at 19-17. Smith dropped in an ace to hand the lead back to the Senators, but again the visitors came up with a timely run, scoring four of the last five points for the set and match victory.
