KEY SEQUENCE
  • After a Charleston foul gave the Senators a free kick chance right near the midfield stripe, senior Samantha Cozzolino stepped in and played a looping ball to a cutting Asheli Freed, who gathered and uncorked a shot to the left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freed had a shot blocked while Nariana Nealy had an early opportunity saved at 15:40, but that seemed to jumpstart the Senators, who pushed the pace from there. After an offside play at 26:07, Davis & Elkins cashed in on the free kick opportunity around two minutes later.
  • The Senators locked it down from there defensively, not allowing a Charleston shot for the remainder of the half. Eventually the Golden Eagles placed a shot wide at the 49:17 mark.
  • Katie Clarke denied an attempt off a corner at 66:27, helping the Senators maintain the 1-0 edge. Another offensive flurry almost doubled the D&E lead, as Brianna Rose and Freed had shots saved by Kaylee Hensley.
  • Clarke made one final save in the 81st minute to preserve the shutout.

GAME NOTES
  • The Senators held Charleston to just four shots on target, all of which were stopped by Clarke.
  • Freed is now up to three goals this season after cashing in again tonight. Cozzolino added her first point of the season with the assist.
  • Freed is now tied with Brooke Shehade (Frostburg State) for the second most goals in the Mountain East Conference this season.
  • D&E has outshot its opponent in each of the first three games to begin the 2019 season.

UP NEXT
  • Davis & Elkins caps its busy week with a Saturday afternoon contest against Concord for Homecoming weekend.
  • Game time is slated for 2:00 PM from Nuttall Field and will feature live stats and live video.
