Men’s Soccer Rebounds With 2-0 Victory at Concord Sunday

KEY SEQUENCE
  • Coming out the aggressor and looking to reverse its fortunes from the last time out, Davis & Elkins posted three corner kicks and five shots before the unyielding pressure resulted in a fortunate bounce. Davis & Elkins got on the board for the first time in 2019 with an own goal, and the Senators did not relent on their way to a 2-0 win over Concord, marking their first victory as a member of the Mountain East Conference.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Senators had three corners within the first 10 minutes as Concord struggled to gain its footing at home. D&E followed it up with shots from Luca Compagnucci, Victor Pires and Matteo Ghezzi before another offensive flurry resulted in an own goal in the 27th minute. Ghezzi and Patrick Holley each launched wide shots prior to the own goal at 26:55 as Davis & Elkins took a 1-0 lead.
  • Nicholas Burnz worked his way open for a shot in the 42nd minute that was turned aside by Concord keeper Kyle Brown. The Senators continued the offensive pressure in the second half and turned to keeper Everton Carvalho, who made saves at 49:39, 56:15 and 73:02.
  • Burnz added the insurance marker, the first goal of his collegiate career, off a pass from Ghezzi in the 87th minute. The Senators had three corners leading up to the goal, and Burnz put the visitors up 2-0 with just a few minutes left in the contest.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Nine different players attempted a shot for Davis & Elkins. Ghezzi led the squad with three shots, while Compagnucci had two shots on target.
  • The 12 corners in a game is the most since the 2013 season when Davis & Elkins had 14 in a game against Ohio Valley in a 7-0 win against Ohio Valley.
  • Davis & Elkins showcased some of the depth on the 2019 roster, substituting seven players in the contest.
  • Davis & Elkins now moves to 3-0 against Concord dating back to 2011. The Senators picked up a 1-0 victory at home back on October 15, 2011 and followed it up with a 7-2 road triumph on October 7, 2012.
