Women’s Hoops Downed at Fairmont State on Saturday

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins fell victim to a hot-shooting Fairmont State squad in a 97-60 loss to the Falcons to begin Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.
 
Davis & Elkins (0-5, 0-1 MEC) placed two player sin double figures, led by Sydney Nestor, who registered 13 points and six rebounds. Peyton Mohler posted her second double figure outing of the season with 12 points and three assists in 28 minutes.
 
Fairmont State (3-3, 1-0 MEC) set a new season high in scoring with 97 points and sunk 11 three-point field goals, with nine coming in the second quarter. Kamrin Weimer led the Falcons with 24 points in 29 minutes, while Sierra Kotchman added 15 points.
 
The Falcons closed the last 5:24 of the first half on a 25-10 run to pull ahead and build their lead for the remainder of the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded buckets in the early going and Nestor dropped in a layup to tie the score at six. Fairmont pushed its lead to 15-6 before Abbie Bartenslager took a Jessica Eadsforth-Yates pass and converted a three to make it 15-9 with 4:31 in the opening frame.
  • D&E made several foul shots to end the quarter, but surrendered a Rachel Laskody layup with just one second left as the Senators trailed 19-15 at the end of one.
  • Fairmont found its touch from beyond the arc in the second quarter, connecting on nine three-pointers in the second quarter to push its lead to 54-33 at the break.
  • Nestor stuck a layup for the first bucket of the second half to make it 54-35, but once again the Falcons proved to be too much, stretch their lead to 78-50 at the end of three.
  • Each team emptied the bench as the fourth quarter commenced and the Falcons shot 64.3% from the floor in the final frame to preserve the conference win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Mohler was solid offensively for D&E in the opening half, helping the Senators to shoot 50% from the field in the first two quarters with nine points.
  • Ten different players registered a point for the Senators, who emptied the bench in the second half.
  • Fairmont used a big second quarter to pull ahead, outscoring the Senators 35-18.
  • Rachel Bolyard posted her highest scoring effort of her brief D&E career, scoring eight points in 13 minutes off the bench.
