HOW IT HAPPENED
- Set One: Davis & Elkins jumped in front for an early lead, thanks to several WLU attack errors and the offense of Lillie Mueller, who finished with five kills in the frame. Leading 24-17, D&E staved off a late run from West Liberty to take the opening set by a 25-23 margin.
- Set Two: D&E answered back from a slow start in the second set, taking its first lead of the frame at 9-8 following a kill from LaCour. A 6-2 West Liberty run prompted a Davis & Elkins timeout, trailing 14-10. Consecutive kills from Mintschenko made it 17-12 in favor of the Hilltoppers, but the Senators fired off a 9-1 run following a timeout to battle back for the dramatic 25-23 set win. Trailing by five, LaCour had two kills and Smith added an ace to help fuel the big run.
- Set Three: O'Kane had three kills in the early portions of the set, pushing the Senators to the quick 6-2 edge. Three consecutive attack errors halted a West Liberty surge as D&E moved its edge to 11-7. The Hilltoppers responded following their timeout, nabbing the 12-11 lead. WLU remained in control through the latter portions of the third set, holding on for the 25-18 set win.
- Set Four: Weaver fired a kill for a 5-3 lead in the fourth set and LaCour extended it with a big swing for a 9-6 advantage. Warren placed a kill in the middle of three WLU players for the 11-10 lead before WLU rattled off a scoring surge for a 15-13 lead. LaCour delivered two straight kills to tie the set at 15 and powered down another swing for a 17-15 lead. A 6-3 run to close the frame dashed any hopes of a West Liberty comeback attempt as the Senators took the set and the match.
