WHEELING, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins bowed out of the 2019 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Volleyball tournament following a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Wheeling on Friday night at the McDonough Center.
Davis & Elkins (19-10) finished the season with its most wins this decade and the most in any season for head coach
Kylie Heyne.
Luann O'Kane provided consistent offensive production throughout the evening with 11 kills and
Kaitlyn LaCour added 10 kills and 11 digs.
Sarah Warren had 31 assists for the Senators and
Lillie Mueller added six kills.
Wheeling (30-3) hit .313 on the evening and advances to the 2019 MEC Championship against second-seeded Urbana on Saturday night. The Cardinals had three players with 10+ kills, including 14 from Breanna Kramer. Stephanie Sylvester assisted on 46 of 50 kills for the Cardinals, who advance to the conference championship for the seventh-straight year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Set One: After a back-and-forth start which saw each team trading points, Wheeling strung together a 5-0 run for a 14-9 lead in the opening set. Mueller gave Davis & Elkins a kill out of the timeout, but Wheeling regained control by stretching its 5-0 run to a larger 10-2 outburst for a 19-11 advantage. LaCour fired in a kill to keep the set going at 24-15, but Wheeling capped the set on the next rally for the 25-15 victory.
- Set Two: O'Kane laced a kill to trim the Senators early deficit to 7-5 before a 3-1 run tied the set at eight following kills from LaCour and Mueller. Wheeling responded with a 7-1 run for a 15-9 lead to move back in front after a surge from the Senators. The Cardinals ended the set with six of the final eight points to take the second set and a commanding 2-0 match lead.
- Set Three: D&E opened with a 4-2 advantage to start the third set after a kill from Mueller and several Wheeling errors. A theme most of the night, Wheeling answered back with a run, posting four of the next five points to regain the lead. Raleighanne Weaver delivered a big kill to tie the set at seven and the score remained close through the middle portions of the set. LaCour put down a kill, trimming the deficit to 19-15. Wheeling continued to keep the Senators at bay, ultimately earning the sweep with a 25-20 set win.
MATCH NOTES
- Wheeling hit .318 in the opening set on its way to the 1-0 match lead. LaCour and O'Kane had four kills each for the Senators in the first set.
- O'Kane was strong for the Senators offensively, recording her third match with 10 or more kills this season. It was her first double-digit kill match since September 20 in the Senators home opener against Alderson Broaddus.
- Total blocks were even at five each.
- D&E will lose several key seniors, including LaCour and Kelly Smith, who will finish their careers with their names dotted throughout the school record book in several categories.
- The Cardinals have not lost a conference match in the regular season or tournament since the MEC was formed.
- Wheeling moves to 6-0 all-time against Davis & Elkins, dating back to the 2011 season. The Cardinals have not lost a set in those six matches.
