INDIANA, Pa. – Trailing by double digits entering the fourth quarter, the Senators clamped things down defensively and held Mansfield without a field goal for the final 4:47 of the game. The effort wasn't enough as the Senators dropped to 0-2 on the season with a 73-70 loss to the Mounties on Sunday evening at the Memorial Field House as part of the 2019 PSAC/MEC Challenge.
Jamiyah Johnson was stellar for the Senators with a double-double behind 19 points and 16 rebounds.
Jay Kilpatrick tied a game-high with 20 points for Davis & Elkins (0-2), while
Sydney Nestor had her first double-figure scoring game of the year with 11 points and eight boards.
Mansfield (1-1) was able to salt the game away at the foul line down the stretch, holding off a final push from the Senators. Jasmine Hilton had 20 points and six rebounds to lead the Mounties, who placed four scores in double figures.
The Mounties opened the game with a 9-0 run before Nestor recorded the first D&E bucket with 5:51 left in the opening quarter. A Kilpatrick three made it a two-point game at 9-7, but the Mounties responded with a late three in the second quarter to take an 11-point edge into intermission. Mansfield pushed its lead to 20 with a Whitfield jumper in the third quarter before Davis & Elkins began to chip away.
Jessica Eadsforth-Yates followed up a missed three with a layup to make it 59-51 but Mansfield ballooned its lead back to 10 on its next trip down the floor. A pair of free throws from Kilpatrick trimmed the deficit to five (66-61) and Johnson converted the hoop and harm to make it 68-64 with less than two minutes remaining.
