ELKINS, W. Va. – Victor Pires made a nifty move with the ball and poked a shot into the right corner of the net in the 14th minute to push Davis & Elkins to a 1-0 shutout victory against Wheeling on Wednesday night at a crisp Nuttall Field.
Pires' third goal of the season was all the offensive output Davis & Elkins needed as
Everton Carvalho recorded the shutout in goal.
Jens Ovreseth made a tactical play of his own to shield the ball away from a Wheeling defender and deliver a ball into the box for a cutting Pires, who found a seam and did the rest.
Wednesday marks the second consecutive shutout victory for Davis & Elkins (4-4, 3-4 MEC), while Wheeling (1-8, 0-7 MEC) has dropped its seventh contest in a row. It was all part of a balanced effort for the Senators, as four different players recorded multiple shots in the 1-0 victory.
Francisco Ferrer was active throughout the match while
Sebastian Ongkowijaya controlled play in the middle of the field for much of the night. The Senators were whistled for 20 fouls in the contest and picked up two yellow cards.
