GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
KEY SEQUENCE
  • Davis & Elkins got all the offense it needed midway through the first half after Roxanne McFarlin drilled home a loose ball in front for a 1-0 advantage. The defense and goalkeeper Katie Clarke took things from there, keeping a strong West Virginia Wesleyan squad off the scoresheet on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each side traded chances in the early going, but the goalkeepers were up to the task. Brianna Rose ran free on the left side of the box before launching a shot that was saved. Another scramble proved to be the difference later in the first half, as Nariana Nealy finessed a shot through traffic that caromed off the right post. The shot bounced right back in front to a waiting McFarlin, who converted the scoring chance from close range to lift the Senators to a 1-0 lead.
  • Clarke made one more save in the opening half as the Bobcats pushed for the game-tying marker. West Virginia Wesleyan launched a three-shot flurry to begin the second half, knocking two attempts wide just moments into the second period.
  • Nealy got in position for a header off a corner kick attempt, only to be stopped by Chelsea Hubner. Clarke and the defense did not surrender any key scoring chances as the freshman keeper made three saves the rest of the way.

GAME NOTES
  • McFarlin, who has been working her way back to full strength over the last few games, converted her first goal of the 2019 season on Thursday. She became the fourth Senator to find the back of the net this season, joining Nealy, Asheli Freed and Angelina Horan.
  • Davis & Elkins rekindled its rivalry with nearby West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday as the teams met for the first time since 2012. The Senators now hold a 2-1-2 edge in the all-time series, dating back to 2010.
  • Thursday marked the second consecutive 1-0 win for the Senators.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan held the edge in shots (16-8) and shots on goal (8-3).
  • Clarke has notched a total of 19 saves over her last two outings in goal.

UP NEXT
  • Davis & Elkins will continue conference play, returning to action on Saturday, October 5 against Frostburg State.
  • Kickoff is slated for 5:00 PM from Nuttall Field.
