CANTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Soccer team picked up their third double-overtime victory of the season Saturday night, defeating Malone University 2-1 in Great Midwest play.
Asheli Freed, who originally gave the Senators the lead in the second half, converted from the penalty spot with 1:24 remaining in the second overtime to give the Senators their third victory of the season, all of which have come in the second overtime.
Freed started the scoring in the 60th minute as the junior got on the receiving end of a cross from
Lisa Milliken and then fired past Haleigh Seman to give the visitors the lead.
The lead didn't last long however, as the hosts tied things at 1-1 with Dani Giles goal in the 70th minute.
Both teams fired plenty of shots on the night, with Malone holding the slimmest margin in shots, 20-19.
Davis & Elkins was only able to put five on target, but the Senators' keeper
Lauren Hill was called into action several times. The senior recorded seven saves in the first half, four in the second half and one more save in the first overtime to keep the Senators in contention.
Saturday night's game was the fourth to reach double overtime this season for the Senators, who tied in the season opener at West Liberty before victories against Kentucky Wesleyan, Alderson Broaddus and now Malone, all 2-1 scores.
With the win, the Senators climb to the midpoint of the standings, sitting in seventh on nine points heading into next Thursday's game at Lake Erie. The Senators will face the Storm at 11 a.m. in Painesville, Ohio.
