ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team fought off a comeback bid to defeat Ohio Valley 3-2 Tuesday night in a pivotal Great Midwest divisional battle.
The Senators started off strong with a 25-17 victory in set one. After a narrow 25-23 loss in set two, Davis & Elkins regained the lead with a 25-18 win in set three. However, the Senators needed a 15-12 victory in the fifth set to secure the victory.
Kaitlyn LaCour led the Senators with 15 kills in the match.
Mya Mintschenko joined her in double figures with 12 kills.
Charisse Mitchell, who led the Senators with a .471 attacking percentage, had nine kills.
LaCour (5) and Mitchell were key parts of the blocking up front, which was led by
Lillie Mueller, who finished with seven block assists.
Kelly Smith led the Senators defensively on the back line, finishing with 19 digs. LaCour also was in double figures, finishing with 11.
Briana Hoffmann and
Madi Gil each had nine digs.
Jessa Henry finished with a season high 42 assists in the match. She also had a season high four aces to lead the Senators.
The Senators will now hit the road for three straight, starting off with a trip to Findlay on Friday. The Senators will face the Oilers with a first serve set for 7 p.m. in Ohio.
