ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team earned a 3-2 victory over Salem University in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon in the Senators home opener at Harpertown Field.
The Senators first game in Elkins this season didn't start out as planned, as the visitors jumped on the scoreboard with a RBI single that scored a run from second.
Salem held the lead into the third inning where
Corey Mays tied things up at 1-1 with one swing of the bat, hitting a homerun to left center.
The Senators then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as
Maxx Mahon scored from third on a RBI grounder through the right side by
Robbie McKinney.
The lead wouldn't hold however, as the visitors scored on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt with runners in the corners to tie the game up at 2.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Mahon broke the tie and put the Senators ahead with a 2-out homerun to left field, his seventh of the season, putting Davis & Elkins ahead 3-2.
The lead was all Arman Lahkani needed, as the reliever pitched a 1-2-3 inning, including a pair of strikeouts to secure the victory in relief.
Lahkani tossed three scoreless innings for his second win of the season, allowing just one baserunner on a hit while striking out five.
Shawn Pass tossed the first six innings in a no decision. Pass allowed two runs on seven hits. Pass had eight strikeouts to just one walk in the outing.
The Senators are scheduled to return to action on April 7-8, taking on Kentucky Wesleyan. The three-game series is set for an opening doubleheader on April 7, with the first pitch at 12 p.m. at Harpertown Field.
