BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team broke a scoreless tie in the 10th inning of Wednesday night's non-conference battle at West Virginia Wesleyan to defeat the Bobcats 2-0 in a clash between old WVIAC foes.
The Senators earned a leadoff walk from
Tyler Mason to begin the 10th inning. After
Shawn Pass pinch ran for Mason,
Johnny Liu stepped up and doubled to left field, scoring Pass all the way from first to break the tie.
Two batters later,
Steven White added an insurance run as he too doubled, allowing Liu to score.
The second run would be more than enough for
Austin Main, who tossed a scoreless ninth inning, and then came back in for the 10th and closed out the game by striking out the side.
Main struck out the last five batters he faced in his two innings of relief work.
Davis & Elkins was held to just four hits and a walk over the first nine innings of the game.
However, the Senators pitching staff blanked Wesleyan as well, scattering five hits over the first four innings.
The Senators faced the minimum from the fifth inning on, retiring the Bobcats in order in all but the sixth inning, where a walk allowed by Arman Lahkani was erased when
James Turnbull threw out the baserunner on a stolen base attempt.
Noah Jarboe,
Max Larimore and
Brent McMillion all tossed 1-2-3 innings for the Senators.
Davis & Elkins will now set their sights on a three-game series with Alderson Broaddus this weekend. Games one and two are set for a doubleheader on Saturday with a first pitch scheduled for noon.
