HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team dropped its Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader opener to Hillsdale Sunday, falling 24-13 in game one and 4-1 in game two.
The Senators found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreline in the highest offensive output of the season in game one, as the two teams combined for 37 runs on 38 hits.
Davis & Elkins took a lead in the top of the first inning with a solo homerun from
Maxx Mahon over the left-centerfield fence.
The hosts would answer back with a big inning in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs. Hillsdale would add one more in the second before the Senators answered back.
In the top of the third, the Senators used another homerun to plate two runs, as
Bragg Eastin hit a shot to right field that also scored
Hunter Thomas.
Hillsdale would respond with six runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fifth to go up 16-3.
Steven White would hit an RBI groundout that scored
Brandon Plummer in the sixth inning.
After Hillsdale scored two more in the sixth, Davis & Elkins added one more run in the top of the eighth with Plummer scoring on a sacrifice fly from
James Turnbull.
The Chargers would pile on six more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Senators would respond with eight runs in the top of the ninth.
Robbie McKinney started off the inning with a solo homerun to right.
With the bases loaded later in the inning, Plummer would score on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
Chase DeGrood capped off a 4-for-5 game with a two-run single that scored Plummer and Eastin.
The Senators would load the bases again and McKinney stepped in for the second time in the inning and hit a grand slam over the right field fence to cap off the scoring.
Austin Main picked up the loss, lasting one inning, giving up six runs on six hits and three walks.
In game two, the Senators took the lead again in the top of the first with a Mahon double to left center that scored McKinney.
Unlike game one, the game would go scoreless for several innings, with the Senators holding the lead into the fifth inning.
Hillsdale would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth and take the lead on a bases clearing double. The hosts would add one more in the inning to cap the scoring.
The Senators would be held to just three hits in the game.
On the mound,
Brent McMillion picked up the loss in 5.1 innings of work. McMillion gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits and six walks. McMillion had four strikeouts.
Max Larimore tossed the final two outs, both strikeouts, with no hits or walks allowed.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Monday, as the Senators take on Findlay in a makeup doubleheader from Saturday's snow out. The doubleheader is set for a 12 p.m. start in Ohio.
