BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team dropped its doubleheader to King University on Friday to close out the opening series of the 2018 season. The Senators fell in game one 10-2 and then dropped the second game 4-2.
Like Thursday, the Senators jumped out to a lead in both games, scoring a run in the top of the first of game one.
Johnny Liu singled to start the game and then reached third following a hit by pitch to
Maxx Mahon and
Bragg Eastin being walked. Liu would then score on a wild pitch.
Despite taking the early lead, the Senators would fall behind quickly as King scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Tornadoes would then add two in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to jump out to a 10-1 advantage.
The Senators would get one back in the top of the seventh, as Liu singled to center to score
Steven White, who pinch ran after a leadoff walk by
Troy McMillion.
Nicholas Sanderson picked up the loss, tossing two innings and allowing five runs on four hits.
Derek Sicca had a strong appearance out of the bullpen, going three scoreless innings with just two hits and a walk allowed while striking out four.
For the first time all series, neither team scored in the opening inning. However, the Senators still took an early lead as
Shawn Pass and
Bragg Eastin scored on a fielder's choice and then a throwing error.
The Senators would hold the lead until the third inning when King scored twice to tie the game.
King would take the lead in the fifth inning, adding two more runs.
The Senators put two runners on in the seventh but were unable to get the runs across homeplate.
Brent McMillion started the game and went 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
The Senators will return to action next week with four more games in Tennessee. Davis & Elkins will face Tusculum twice and Notre Dame College twice over three days. The opening game will be at 4 p.m. on Friday against Tusculum.
