MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team fell to No. 5 University of Mount Olive in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Senators dropped the opener 12-2 before a tight 6-4 battle in game two.
The Senators were unable to keep up with the top-5 program in game one, as the Trojans scored runs in the first, second and fourth to go up 3-0 after four innings.
Mount Olive then added four runs in the sixth, a run in the seventh and four in the eighth.
The Senators would score two runs in the ninth inning to avoid the shutout.
Johnny Renzelli would put the Senators on the scoreboard with a groundout to the right side that scored
Steven White from third.
White finished with two of the four hits for the Senators in the game.
Bragg Eastin would then single to the right side later in the inning, scoring
Shawn Pass.
Cody Luker picked up the loss, tossing 5.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.
In game two, the Senators would jump out to a lead after three runs in the top of the first inning.
With the bases loaded in the first,
Maxx Mahon hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring
Johnny Liu from third.
Travis Danielson then hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score
Hunter Thomas from third and Pass from second.
Mount Olive would answer back with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Senators would hold the lead until the Trojans tied up the game with two in the bottom of the third.
The hosts would then take the lead with two in the fifth and a run in the sixth.
The Senators would get one run back in the seventh and final inning with
Connor Fitzgerald scoring on a throwing error on a ball in play from
Troy McMillion, but D&E would be unable to score any more.
Austin Main picked up the loss in relief, going 3.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.
Brent McMillion started the game, allowing three runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
The Senators will close out the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon in North Carolina.
