GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team split its doubleheader on its final day in Tennessee, defeating Notre Dame (OH) 5-3, before falling to Tusculum 9-2 to close out the weekend.
In game one, the Senators fell behind early as Notre Dame scored in the bottom of the first. However, Davis & Elkins answered back in the top of the second, scoring three runs.
The Senators got on the scoreboard and tied the game with
Connor Fitzgerald scoring from third on a bases load play with
Steven White reaching on a fielder's choice where all runners were safe.
Johnny Liu then singled to right field to score
Chase DeGrood from third. With the bases still loaded,
Hunter Thomas reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Troy McMillion.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Davis & Elkins extended its lead with
Shawn Pass' single to center field that scored Thomas.
Pass would extend the Senators lead in the top of the seventh with another RBI single, this time scoring
Maxx Mahon.
Pass would finish 2-4 in the game with a walk and the two RBIs. Mahon also had two hits for the Senators.
Notre Dame would answer back with two runs in the seventh, but
Max Larimore tossed the final 2.2 innings to get the save.
Noah Jarboe picked up the win in relief, tossing three innings. Jarboe allowed two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out two.
In game two, the Senators took the lead in the top of the first with Mahon's double to center field, scoring Liu.
Mahon finished with three hits in the game.
However, three errors, one in each of the first, second, and third innings allowed five unearned runs to cross the plate for Tusculum, who took a commanding 5-1 lead.
The hosts would then add two more runs in the fourth and two in the seventh.
Davis & Elkins would score in the eighth, as
Brandon Plummer stole second, allowing Thomas to steal home in a first-and-third situation.
But the Senators wouldn't be able to answer anymore, going scoreless in the ninth.
Larimore, who gave up the three unearned runs in the second inning was dealt the loss.
With the split, the Senators went 2-2 on the weekend, going 1-1 against Notre Dame and 1-1 against Tusculum.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Saturday, as the Senators travel to Mount Olive for a doubleheader to begin a three-game series. The double header is set for a 12 p.m. start in North Carolina.
