Women's Soccer Knocks Off League Leader With 2-1 Overtime Victory

ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Soccer team came from behind to defeat the Great Midwest Athletic Conference league leader Findlay, with a 2-1 overtime victory Saturday evening at Nuttall Field.

The Senators matched the Oilers for the majority of the first half, as both teams had five shots and a corner kick a piece.

Davis & Elkins had one major mistake, setting Findlay up with a breakaway opportunity in the 26th minute. Shannon Marsh was free past the Senators defense, but senior Lauren Hill led Marsh to the right and was able to stop the shot, keeping the score tied at 0.

In the second half, the visitors started strong with several shots, controlling much of the play. In the 63rd minute, the Oilers finally took the lead, as Olivia Frank was played in by Marsh and beat left Hill with no chance to stop a left footed shot to the top right corner.

The Senators then picked up their pace of play and took control of the final 25 minutes of regulation. First Samantha Cozzolino had a long shot beat Anna Money but hit off of the left post.

Natalia Ruiz Guerrero then added a late edge for the Senators. Ruiz Guerrero first had a quality free kick attempt stopped, before she set up the tying goal in the 84th minute.

The Senators found the breakthrough by way of a set piece, as McFarlin elevated on a corner kick by Ruiz Guerrero and headed past Money to tie the game at one.

Neither team would have another shot in the remainder of regulation, sending the Senators to their seventh overtime game of the season.

In the overtime period, Cozzolino nearly gave the Senators the win as she had another long effort strike the woodwork, this time glancing off of the cross bar four minutes in.

Davis & Elkins would then win a corner in the 96th minute. Bailey Aab's corner was knocked out for a second corner kick from the left side.

Aab's second corner sailed to the back side of the penalty area where Tessa Stewart sent the ball back across goal on target, where Ellie Rossiter redirected it in with a header to give the Senators the win.

Davis & Elkins finished the game with 13 shots to 12 from Findlay. Both goalies finished the game with three saves each. The Senators had nine corners to just two for the Oilers, while Findlay had 14 fouls in the game to seven from the hosts.

The Senators will now set their sights on another important match in the Great Midwest tournament picture, as Davis & Elkins travels to Cedarville on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Ohio.
