ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team fell to Walsh University 3-1 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day for the Senators at the McDonnell Center.
Prior to the game, the Senators recognized its seniors,
Charisse Mitchell,
Alexa Smarra and
Briana Hoffmann, who all played a big part in a strong start for D&E.
Smarra and Mitchell recorded the Senators first point with a block and then Smarra added a kill. Mitchell followed it up by teaming up with
Raleighanne Weaver on three consecutive blocks to give the Senators the momentum.
The Senators would go on to win the first set against the division leaders 25-19. However, the momentum would fade late in the second set, as the Senators eventually fell 26-24, before losing sets three and four 25-14 and 25-19.
Smarra and Mitchell would each finish with seven kills, one behind
Kaitlyn LaCour for the team high. Smarra would share in the team high with
Kelly Smith for digs, each recording 12 in the match.
LaCour,
Elyse Bonnett and
Madi Gil all had 10 digs each. Hoffmann finished with seven.
Bonnett would lead the Senators with 22 assists in the game.
Jessa Henry finished with 13, while Smarra also had two.
Mitchell led the Senators defensively up front, contributing to nine blocks. Mitchell had one solo block and also had eight assisted blocks.
Smith led the Senators offensively from the back line, recording three aces in the match. Hoffmann and Bonnett each had two aces.
The Senators will finish the regular season on the road, starting the first of five straight away from home at Alderson Broaddus on Tuesday, October 23. First serve is set for 6 p.m. against the Battlers.
