FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team snapped its losing streak with a high-energy victory over Charleston Tuesday night in non-conference action.
The Senators (6-12) defeated the future conference rival and Mountain East leaders 3-1, winning 25-23, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18.
Davis & Elkins jumped out to an early lead in set one, but following a run by the visitors, trailed late. The Senators then rallied off five of the next six points to pull far enough ahead to fight a Golden Eagles (9-10) comeback and win by two.
The Senators carried the momentum into the second set and jumped out to a 16-8 lead over Charleston, before trading points most of the way to the set two victory.
After a strong run late in set three by Charleston, the Senators had to overcome a deficit in the fourth set. Charleston was ahead by as much as 4 with a 13-9 lead in set four, but the Senators fought off any chance of a collapse with a 16-6 run to close out the set and the match.
Kaitlyn LaCour (16),
Solei Daniels (12) and
Raleighanne Weaver (10) all reached double figures in kills for the match. LaCour was also second on the team in digs with 18.
Kelly Smith led the way defensively for the Senators on the backline, recording 24 digs.
Briana Hoffmann also was in double figures with 12 digs.
Elyse Bonnett had 24 assists for the Senators in the match.
Jessa Henry also had 16 assists and finished with four kills, leading the Senators with a .250 attacking percentage.
Bonnett, Hoffmann and Smith all finished with one ace each.
Defensively up front,
Hope Jennings chipped in on a team high seven blocks, recording one solo block and six assisted blocks. Weaver also had six assisted blocks. LaCour had one solo block and two assisted blocks, while
Lillie Mueller had two assisted blocks.
The Senators hit .158 for the match offensively, while also holding Charleston to a .059 attacking percentage.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Friday, as the Senators host Alderson Broaddus in a Great Midwest match. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the McDonnell Center.
