ELKINS - The Davis and Elkins College Men's Soccer team picked up a great 4-1 win against Ohio Dominican University in a pivotal Great Midwest battle on homecoming Saturday afternoon on Nuttall Field.
On a day marked by the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first National championship won by the Senators, the home team put on a show for the alumni who were present.
With both teams refusing to give each other space, it wasn't until the 35th minute of the match when Matteo Ghezzi gave the Senators the lead with a shot from outside the box into the left bottom corner.
The visitors kept pushing but weren't able to find a space through D&E's defense and both teams went to half-time with the 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard for the Senators.
Not satisfied with the 1-0 lead, the Senators kept the pressure up and Pedro Bassin was fouled inside the 18 yards box, giving the Senators a penalty kick ten minutes into the second period. Bassin took the penalty kick himself, with the junior scoring his fifth goal of the season.
D&E continued to pressure with the attack and in the 72nd minute,
Markus Just scored the third goal of the day with a header, assisted by the senior
Niklas Rasch-Hegelund who found Just free inside the box with a cross from the left.
The visitors would get one in with eight minutes left on the clock to cut the deficit to 3-1.
However, it just took the Senators 20 seconds to get the energy back as
Abel Ameyaw received a pass from
Felipe Polycarpo that broke ODU's defense, putting the striker on the spot to get a left-foot shot on the right side, closing the game with the final score of 4-1.
The Davis and Elkins College Men's Soccer team will be back on the road as they face Tiffin University next Thursday in Ohio. Kick off is set for 2:00 p.m.
