Volleyball's Win Over WVWC Highlights Opening Weekend

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team opened its season this weekend at the Rebich Investments Invitational hosted by Edinboro University.
 
The Senators split day one with a loss to host Edinboro before defeating West Virginia Wesleyan. However, the Senators fell to the College of Saint Rose and Lock Haven on Saturday.
 
In the opener, D&E fell to the Fighting Scots 3-0 with set defeats of 18-25, 20-25 and 16-25. The Senators had 32 kills compared to 29 for the hosts, but D&E also had 25 attacking errors to just 12 for Edinboro.
 
Zoe Craig, Alexa Smarra and Kelly Smith all had four kills to lead D&E. Smith led the Senators with nine digs, while Briana Hoffmann and newcomer Madi Gil had six each. Craig also had 13 assists.
 
In game two of the day, Davis & Elkins swept through former WVIAC foe West Virginia Wesleyan with a 3-0 victory of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-23.
 
Sasha Johnson led the Senators with eight kills, while Lillie Mueller had seven and Kaitlyn LaCour had six.
 
Raleighanne Weaver was a part of five blocks, while Anna Gallup chipped in on three blocks as the Senators forced 26 attacking errors by Wesleyan.
 
Mueller led the Senators with seven digs. Smith and Smarra had six digs each.
 
On day two, Davis & Elkins started off with a 1-1 game through two sets, falling 23-25 before winning 25-22 against Saint Rose. However, the Senators fell by another 25-23 margin in set three and lost the game with a 25-17 fourth set.
 
Mueller (12), Johnson (9) and LaCour (8) led the way for the Senators in kills. Johnson also led the team with six blocks. Smith, Craig and Gil also combined for eight of the nine aces for the Senators in the match.
 
Craig finished with 39 assists and 10 digs, while Smith had 19 digs and Mueller finished with 13.
 
The Senators closed out the tournament with a 3-0 defeat to Lock Haven, despite three close sets, falling 20-25, 23-25, 22-25.
 
Johnson led the Senators with seven kills, while Gallup (6) and Mueller (5) were among the top three in kills for D&E. Mueller and Johnson also had four blocks each.
 
LaCour led the Senators defensively with 13 digs, while Mueller finished with 12. Craig added 26 more assists in the match.
 
The Senators will return to action on Friday with a pair of games in California, Pennsylvania. D&E will face Daemen at noon, before taking on host Cal (PA) at 6 p.m.
