CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team fell to Trevecca Nazarene in a doubleheader on Sunday at the University of Charleston's Triana Field.
In game one, the Senators and Trojans remained scoreless into the fifth inning when Trevecca used four hits and an error to plate four runs and take the lead.
Trevecca would add four more runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding lead. The Trojans would also add a run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in the ninth.
The Senators broke their scoreless drought in the eighth inning with three runs.
Michael Wood's RBI single to left scored
Johnny Liu for the first run of the game.
Hunter Thomas then had a 2 RBI single later in the inning, scoring
Bragg Eastin and
Robbie McKinney.
The Senators would add one more in the ninth with McKinney's RBI single up the middle to score Liu.
Liu finished 2-for-4 in the game with a walk, double and two stolen bases. Thomas was 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
Austin Main fell to 1-2 on the year, tossing 5.2 innings, allowing six earned runs. He finished with five strikeouts.
In game two, the Senators fell behind early, as Trevecca plated a run in the top of the first. The Trojans would go on to add two more runs in the third inning.
The Senators responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, as
Steven White singled through the right side to score Thomas.
McKinney cut the deficit to one in the sixth inning with an RBI single up the middle to score Liu from second.
On the next play, Wood bunted down the first base line to allow
Tanner Ray to score from third, tying the game at three.
However, Trevecca would capitalize on a hit batter and a pair of errors, the first a throwing error and the second from catcher's interference that would allow the Trojans to take a 4-3 lead headed to the bottom of the seventh.
Arman Lakhani picked up the loss, allowing the winning run after hitting the only batter he faced to lead off the seventh.
Tyler Honeycutt tossed six innings, allowing three runs. He finished with four strikeouts.
Thomas and McKinney led the Senators, with both players recording a pair of hits in the game.
The Senators will return to action on Monday with the final two games of the series against Trevecca Nazarene. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. at Triana Field.
