NUTTER FORT, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep of Salem International at Frank Loria Field, winning 6-3 and 9-5 over the Tigers.
The Senators started strong in game one by loading the bases and then showing good plate discipline as
Derek Sicca and
Cody Gwinn would walk in a pair of runs from
Hunter Thomas and
Robbie McKinney.
However, a double play would end the inning.
The Senators would do it again in the fourth, as McKinney would walk in
Nick Dellavalle to give the Senators a 3-0 lead.
McKinney would pick up another RBI in the sixth inning, doubling in Thomas, who had reached the play before on a single up the middle.
Leading 4-0, the Senators would pack on a few more insurance runs in the seventh, as Dellavalle doubled home Brag Eastin and
Manuel Santamaria followed it up with an RBI single to score Dellavalle.
The Tigers would score three in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on an error from the Senators, but
Tyler Honeycutt would pick up the victory.
Honeycutt tossed all seven innings, striking out four batters.
In game two, the hosts would jump out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first and then two more in the second.
The Senators would answer back in the third, as
Tanner Ray's sacrifice fly put D&E on the scoreboard with
Ryan Ray's run. Later in the inning, McKinney would hit an RBI single to score
Johnny Liu.
Salem would pick up a run in the bottom of the fourth and the Senators would answer with
Garrett Dorton's RBI single to score
Tanner Ray in the top of the fifth.
The Senators would take the lead in the sixth inning with four runs, going ahead 7-5. Eastin would score first on an error from a ball put in play by
Dominic Bianchini.
Bianchini then scored on an infield single by
Steven White.
Tanner Ray capped off the scoring in the inning with a 2-RBI single to left, scoring White and
Ryan Ray.
After Thomas scored on a wild pitch,
Tanner Ray would add another insurance run in the seventh with a single down the left field line, scoring
Ryan Ray for the ninth run.
Noah Jarboe picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three.
The Senators will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Athens, West Virginia to take on Concord. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
