SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senators Baseball picked up its first win of 2017, as Davis & Elkins split with Armstrong State in a doubleheader on Saturday at Pirate Field.
The Senators edged out a 3-2 win over the Pirates, snapping their 10-game win streak in the opening game of the 3-game series.
Armstrong State took a lead in the second inning with a single run and carried that lead until D&E capitalized in the seventh.
Cody Gwinn put D&E on the scoreboard and tied things up at one with a RBI single that score
Michael Wood.
Later in the inning with runners on second and third,
Tanner Ray put a ball in play and forced a throwing error that allowed Gwinn to come around and score.
The Senators would add one final run in the inning when
Derek Sicca drew a bases loaded walk to give D&E a 3-1 lead.
Relief pitcher
Austin Main would give up a run in the eighth, but D&E held on as
Forrest Williamson closed out the game in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Tyler Honecutt earned the win with a 6.1 inning outing, striking out five while allowing just the one run on eight hits.
After keeping the Pirate bats and runs to a minimum in game one, D&E fell behind quickly and in a big way as Armstrong State scored five runs in the first, followed by six in the second and five more in the third.
Steven White and
Robbie McKinney would have RBI singles in the second, helping D&E to a three-run inning. Sicca and Ray would also have RBI hits in the fifth, as D&E added three more runs.
However, Armstrong added six more in the sixth inning, smashing any chance of a comeback for the Senators.
The rubber match of the series will get underway tomorrow at noon.
