GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team opened up its 2017 season with a pair of defeats at Limestone College on Saturday at Founders FCU Stadium.
The Senators fell in the opener 6-1, before dropping the second game of the doubleheader 8-6.
D&E's bats struggled to get going in game one as the Senators were held to just four hits. Limestone took the lead in the second on a bases-loaded fielder's choice. The Saints would add two more runs in the third with a single and a RBI ground out.
Limestone would add to their lead with a pair of homers in the sixth, the first a two-run shot.
The Senators would get on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with
Steven White's RBI single up the middle to score
Tanner Ray, who was pinch running for
Garrett Dorton, who reached on a walk.
Tyler Honeycutt was dealt the loss. Honeycutt tossed 5.2 innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out six.
Forrest Williamson pitched the final out for D&E, but not before giving up the two home runs.
In game two, the Senators fell behind again, but by way of a 2-run homerun in the first. However, the Senators would answer back with a RBI ground out by
Robbie McKinney in the second before a three-run homerun by Mike Wood in the third gave the Senators a 4-2 lead.
The lead would be short-lived however, as the hosts would answer back with another homerun from the Saints.
The Senators would then give up three unearned runs in the fifth inning and were unable to recover. D&E would get two back in the top of the sixth with
Tanner Ray's two-RBI single, but Limestone would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and hold on for the victory.
Davis & Elkins will wrap up the opening weekend with the final game of the series on Sunday against Limestone. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
