GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Davis & Elkins College Baseball team fell to Limestone College 7-5 Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of the opening weekend for the Senators.
The Senators started off strong, scoring a run in each of the first five innings, holding a 5-3 lead going into the stretch.
Derek Sicca put the Senators on the scoreboard with an RBI single to center field, scoring
Robbie McKinney.
After the Saints tied things up at one in the bottom half of the inning,
Tanner Ray put D&E back in the lead with another RBI single, scoring
Michael Wood. The lead was short lived however, as Limestone answered back with a two-run second inning.
Wood would be on the other end of the scoring for the Senators in the third as his RBI single scored
Garrett Dorton in the third and tied things up at three.
The Senators would hold the Saints scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and then would take the lead in the fourth with
Nick Dellavalle's solo home run to put D&E up 4-3.
In the next inning, Dellavalle drew a walk with the bases load to give the Senators a 5-3 lead. However, Davis & Elkins would strand the bases load in the inning, three of 11 base runners they would leave on stranded, which proved costly.
The Senators held the hosts scoreless through the sixth inning. D&E then threatened in the top of the 7
th, but stranded the bases loaded again.
Limestone carried that momentum and used it to score two in the seventh and two more in the eighth. The Senators were unable to answer back in the eighth or ninth, falling to their third-straight defeat.
Davis & Elkins will return to the road next week with a trip to Petersburg, Virginia to face Virginia State for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday in the first of two games. Sunday will see a noon start.
