NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball program dropped a pair of contest today to the host Walsh University and Urbana University to wrap up the opening weekend at the Cavalier Classic.
The Senators jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and maintained a lead up to 12-8. However, Walsh went on an 8-0 run to take the lead and the Senators were unable to recover, dropping the opening set 17-25.
In set two, the Senators again jumped out to a lead and responded to Walsh's runs to hold a 24-23 lead, but the Cavaliers were able to take the lead and outlast the Senators for a 28-26 win.
Set three was another tight match and the Senators held a 16-15 lead. However, Walsh closed things out with a 10-1 run to win the game and close out the match.
Elizabeth Estes led the way with 11 kills.
Kendall Jacobson (8) and
Charisse Mitchell (5) were second and third in the game in kills.
Zoe Craig had 30 assists and eight digs.
Devin Saucy and
Michaela Touchet each had 12 digs in the match.
In the second match of the day, the Senators fell to Urbana 1-3.
Davis & Elkins fell to Urbana 17-25 and 12-25 in the first two sets.
In the third set, the Senators picked up a win 26-24. The Senators used a 5-0 run early to regain control of the set and scored five of the last seven points to earn the victory and force a fourth set.
However, D&E was unable to overcome a 10-0 run by Urbana in the early stages of set four, falling 18-25.
Estes again led the way for D&E with 15 kills. Saucy finished second with seven kills.
Charisse Mitchell earned five blocks in the match, while Saucy had 15 more digs to lead the Senators defensively.
The Senators will return to action next week with a trip to Pennsylvania to face California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
