Senators Stumble to California (PA) to Open Up Vulcan Invitational

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team fell to California University of Pennsylvania 1-3 Thursday night in the opening match of the Vulcan Invitational.

The Senators fell behind early as the hosts broke away late from a 19-19 game in set one to win 25-20.

However, the Senators came back in set two, winning the most lopsided set of the match, defeating the Vulcans 25-18.

The Senators won four of the first five points in the set and held the lead all the way through the set, closing it out with an 8-3 run.

Set three started the same way for the Senators, winning the first two points. But things quickly turned around as the Vulcans won 10 of the next 11 points and cruised to a 2-1 lead through three sets.

The teams traded the lead back and forth throughout the fourth set, needing extra points to find a winner. The Senators grabbed a lead twice, going up 26-25 and 27-26, but were unable to secure the next point to force a fifth set, eventually falling 28-30 to close out the match.

Elizabeth Estes led the Senators with 19 kills and 20.5 points overall. Sasha Johnson and Devin Saucy recorded 10 and nine kills, respectively.

Zoe Craig picked up most of the assists, recording 49 on the night.

Michaela Touchet led the effort on the backline, recording a team high 24 digs. Saucy and Kelly Smith also had double digit digs with 11 and 10 on the night, respectively.

Davis & Elkins will return to action on Friday in the Vulcan Invitational, playing Grand Valley State at 3 p.m. and Adelphi at 6 p.m.
