Women's Soccer Claims 2-0 win over Malone in G-MAC Play

CANTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Soccer team picked up a key win in G-MAC play on Thursday, as Katrina Giantsopoulos scored both sides of halftime to earn the Senators all three points and move into a tie for second in the standings.

In a make-up game that was called due to weather conditions earlier in September, the Senators (4-4-0, 4-2-0 G-MAC) came out and controlled play in the first half, putting nine shots into the Malone (3-5-1, 2-4-0 G-MAC) end, including six on target and also forced four corner kicks.

Giantsopoulos found the breakthrough in the 34th minute as the striker came up the right side and beat McKenzie Chappell for her fifth goal of the season.

Lauren Hill would be called into action to make a save on Riley Nicholson's effort just before the half, preserving the slim lead for the guests heading into the break.

Early in the second half, Hill was called upon to make two more saves, while the defense came up with a blocked shot to stifle two corner kick opportunities and one of Malone's best chances to score in the contest.

D&E carried the momentum and in the 68th minute, Giantsopoulos doubled the Senators lead.

Amanda Wray sent a long pass up for the sophomore and Giantsopoulos was able to then take the breakaway and capitalize, beating Chappell again for her team high sixth goal of the campaign.

The Pioneers would put just one more shot on goal, as Hill stopped it for her six saves on the night. In the 79th minute, the game was called due to lightning and weather conditions making an attempt to finish the game impossible.

Due to the game being passed the 70-minute mark, it became official despite not completing the 90 scheduled minutes.

With the win, the Senators sit just one point behind Ursuline (4-1-1, 13 pts) heading into the final games of the first half of the season on Saturday.

The Senators will host Alderson Broaddus (2-6-1, 2-3-1 G-MAC) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
