Volleyball splits opening day of Cavalier Classic to start season

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team split the opening day of the 2016 season with the first of two days at the Cavalier Classic Tournament.
 
The Senators fell in the opening game of the tournament to Bellarmine, 0-3. Later in the day, the Senators rebounded and came from behind to defeat Fairmont State, 3-2.
 
In the opening game, D&E struggled at the net, with 19 attacking errors and a .026 attacking percentage.
 
Elizabeth Estes led the way for the Senators with 12 kills. She also had two blocks in the first game.
 
Zoe Craig and Michaela Touchet each had eight digs in the game and Kendall Jacobson finished with seven.
 
In game two, the Senators had more success up front, recording 53 kills and a .172 attacking percentage.
 
The Falcons picked up the first set in game two, edging D&E 25-21.
 
However, the Senators came from behind to win the match. In set two, the Senators came back with a big 25-15 win. D&E then won set three 25-23 to go up 2-1.
 
After the Falcons won set four, D&E closed out the victory 15-13.
 
Estes again led the Senators with 15 kills. Jacobson was second with 13 kills and Devin Saucy finished with 11 kills.
 
Charisse Mitchell led the team with five blocks in game two, following up three in game one.
 
Craig had 48 assists in the game to finish the day with 64. She also added 16 digs to finish with 24 for the day.
 
Touchet had 21 digs in game two and finished with 29 for the opening day.
 
The Senators will return to action on Saturday with two more games against Walsh and Urbana at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
