Senators Split Final Day of Vulcan Invitational

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Davis & Elkins College Volleyball team split the final day of the Vulcan Invitational with a win against Winston-Salem before falling to Charleston to close out the weekend.
 
The Senators started strong with a win over Winston-Salem in the first set of the day 25-18. After trailing midway through, the Senators won six of the next seven points to take the lead. After Winston-Salem tied up the set at 16, D&E won nine of the final 11 points to win the first set.
 
Winston-Salem answered back in the second set, first winning a match point for the Senators before tying it up and taking the lead 25-24. After D&E won the next point, the dropped the final two points, sending a 1-1 game to the third set.
 
In the third set the Senators came out and absolutely dominated the court. After dropping the first point, D&E worked open a 17-3 lead with the only two points given up coming from errors by the Senators.
 
After giving up the fourth point, the Senators won set three with an 8-1 run to close it out and give D&E a 2-1 leaded headed to the fourth set.
 
In set four, D&E had to come from behind, finding themselves down 6-16 early. Facing a 10-20 deficit, the Senators won the next five points followed by a run of four points a little later to cut the deficit to one.
 
After Winston-Salem went up 23-21, the Senators won the next three points to take the lead before winning two points to close out the match 26-24.
 
Anna Gallup led the Senators with 13 kills. Devin Saucy had nine kills, but also had three aces and finished with 13 points total.
 
Zoe Craig led the team in aces (4), assists (34), and digs (14). Michaela Touchet finished with 13 digs. Kelly Smith was also in double digits with 11 digs.
 
In the second match, D&E and Charleston needed extra points to find a set one winner. Charleston won nine of the first 10 points. The Senators were unable to close in on Charleston for a while, trailing 18-8, before going on a 12-2 run to tie it up at 20.
 
D&E was able to take the lead a couple times, eventually going up 25-24. However, Charleston won the next three points to take the first set.
 
Set two was a game of runs as the Senators took an early lead. However, Charleston won 11 of 12 points to double up D&E 14-7. The Senators closed in cutting the deficit to four, but were unable to get closer and Charleston went on to win 25-20.
 
Set three was a back-and-forth match early on before Charleston won five consecutive points to regain the lead and never looked back.
 
For the weekend, Elizabeth Estes was named to the All-Tournament Team. Estes finished with a team high 45 kills.

The Senators will return to action next week at the Notre Dame/Ursuline co-hosted invitational in the Cleveland area. D&E will play Notre Dame, Gannon, Lake Erie and Shippensburg.
