CANTON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Soccer program played to a 2-2 draw in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Opener on Saturday.
Malone took an early lead on Saturday afternoon, as Nick Astalos scored off of a corner kick from Caleb Griffith, giving the hosts an early lead.
However, the rest of the first half was controlled by the Senators who had 15 shots and six corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. D&E was unable to break through, but forced Malone to play on their heels and led them to a pair of yellow card offenses.
After the restart, it was more one-way traffic for the Senators and
Benjamin Pastur eventually found a breakthrough for the Senators.
Following a Malone foul,
Fredrik Hedemark's free kick was curled into the box where
Alex Samarzich headed it on for Pastur to finish and tie things up at one.
Despite the momentum from the goal, Malone caught the Senators off guard when Gino Finelli caught a roll out and put it past Mehnaoui to put the host back up by one.
The Senators struggled to find another equalizer as the Pioneers came up with several saves, including a couple balls cleared off the line in the second half.
Pastur eventually broke through again on another set-piece play.
Hedemark again sent a free kick into the box that was headed on by
Niklas Rasch-Hegelund before being poked in by Pastur to tie it up at 2.
Neither team could find the back of the net again, sending the game to overtime.
D&E controlled most of the overtime sessions, with four shots, but only put one on frame that was turned away by Cody Hilty.
The Senators finished with 31 total shots in the game to nine for Malone. Mehnaoui finished with two saves.
For Pastur, the goals were the seniors first two of his career at Davis & Elkins.
The Senators will return to action on Thursday when they host Ohio Valley in a G-MAC doubleheader. The men's game is set to start at 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's match.
