ELKINS - The Davis & Elkins College Senators opened up the 2016 season with a 1-1 draw against Bellarmine University at Nuttall Field.
In the first ever night game at Nuttall Field, the Senators found themselves in a tight battle in game one of the G-MAC/GLVC Crossover Classic.
The Senators took the lead when freshman
Kasper Kvello's deflected shot from the top of the box beat the Knights' keeper to the right in the 43rd minute.
Like Kvello,
Ayo Adeyina had come on later in the first half and he found Kvello at the top of the box for the scoring effort and the assist.
Davis & Elkins carried the lead into the half, but the visitors were able to answer back early in the second half. Magnus Bertilsson was able to redirect a cross to beat Senators' keeper Hedi Mehnaoui on the near side.
The Senators had a chance to grab the lead back later in the second half as
Abel Ameyaw forced a save by Zach Pogue that turned into a corner. After
Benjamin Pastur's corner,
Pablo Salvador Lopez had a shot that was cleared off the line by the Bellarmine defense.
Neither team was able to get another quality chance in regulation, forcing a pair of overtime frames Thursday night.
Mehnaoui finished with five saves on six shots on goal from Bellarmine.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Saturday, hosting Indianapolis to start the final day of the Crossover Classic. The kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m.
