Senators Win 2016 G-MAC Championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Soccer team claimed the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday by defeating Ursuline College 2-1.

Senior Kaitlyn Buoni scored the game-winning goal in the 55th minute and the Senators held on by stopping all three second-half attempts from the Arrows to earn the victory and the first conference tournament championship since 2013.

The G-MAC Conference Championship is the second tournament championship in school history and the four of any kind in the 17-year history of the program. Three of the Senators titles have come since joining the G-MAC four seasons ago.

Saturday's championship is also the first time a first-year coach has won a title in the school's history. Meghan Gill took over the program this summer.

Katrina Giantsopoulos started off the scoring in the seventh minute, taking a ball from Ellie Rossiter and beating Helen Jazzar for the early lead.

Ursuline fought back, however, as Jill Bohling tied the game up for Ursuline in the 26th minute.

The two teams went into the break tied at one in a very split contest.

Coming out in the second half, the Senators took control of the game in the first 10 minutes, and it was the lone senior who broke through for D&E.

Buoni took a pass from Asheli Freed and scored to give the No. 4 overall seed the lead and eventually the win.

Lauren Hill stopped four shots in the game and the one goal against was the only goal she and the defense allowed in three games of the tournament, a span of 270 minutes.

The Senators, who clinch the automatic qualifier bid with the championship, will now await the NCAA Selection committee to find out their destination in the upcoming 2016 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships.
