QUINCY, Ill. - The Davis & Elkins College Women's Soccer team's season came to a close after falling 3-1 to McKendree in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
This was the first appearance for the Women's Soccer team, after earning an automatic bid by winning the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Championship last week.
The Senators started off strong, with
Ellie Rossiter getting the first goal of the game in the 24th minute. Senior
Kaitlyn Buoni had the assist, playing a long ball in over the top and Rossiter flicked it over the keeper from the corner of the 6-yard box.
The Senators lead was short-lived however, as McKendree responded in the 31st minute when Sydnee Carroll took an assist from Chelsea Whittaker to score and tie the game at 1-1.
In the second half, while the Senators played well, a foul in the defensive half led to a McKendree breakthrough. In the 61st minute Danielle Hareb found the net, taking a long pass from Alyssa Reininger off of the free kick to put McKendree's ahead 2-1.
A few minutes later, Kate Bixby doubled McKendree's lead with a goal, making the score 3-1.
The Senators attempted to bounce back, putting several shots toward the Bearcats goal, but were unable to cut the deficit.
With the loss the Senators season comes to a close, finishing with a 10-10 record overall for 2016. The conference tournament championship was the second in school history and fourth overall conference title.
