Senators Sweep Ursuline to Advance to G-MAC Title Game

MASON, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Senators Volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Ursuline College on Friday night in the semifinals of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. With the win, the Senators advance to the championship game on Saturday.
 
The Senators fell behind early in the first set, but Davis & Elkins was quickly able to take control of the set and opened a commanding lead to win 25-14.
 
In set two, the Senators continued the momentum early. However, the Arrows opened a lead and held a 20-15 advantage before Kylie Heyne called a timeout to regroup the Senators.
 
Out of the timeout, D&E won seven of the next nine points to tie the match at 22. From there, the Senators won three of the next four points to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
 
The teams traded the lead several times early in set three and neither team could grab more than a 2-point advantage. Ursuline held the lead for several consecutive side-out points until the Senators won two points to tie the set at 21 and force an Ursuline timeout.
 
Kelly Smith then picked up a service ace for Davis & Elkins and the Senators earned another point to go up 23-21 before Ursuline called its second timeout.
 
Out of the timeout, Devin Saucy got a kill and Anna Gallup scored a kill on match point, giving Davis & Elkins a straight-set victory and a berth in the G-MAC Championship game on Saturday.
 
Gallup led the Senators in kills with 10, while Saucy and Sasha Johnson had eight each. Elizabeth Estes also chipped in with seven kills and Zoe Craig had five kills from the setter position.
 
Craig led the team with 26 assists in the match, while Kendall Jacobson and Saucy had four each.
 
Defensively, four Senators were in double digits in digs. Michaela Touchet led the team with 13. Saucy recorded 11 digs and Craig finished with 10, as both put in all-around performances. Smith also finished with 10 digs and Jacobson was one shy of double digits with nine.
 
Up front defensively, Johnson had a solo block and assisted on four more blocks. Estes and Raleigh Weaver also had four assisted blocks, while Gallup and Saucy had two assisted blocks each.
 
With the win, the Senators will face either Malone or Cedarville in the G-MAC Championship game. The match is set for a 2:30 p.m. start in the Mason Arena.
