MASON, Ohio – The Senators Volleyball team fell in a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon, dropping a 5-set classic in the G-MAC Championship game to Cedarville.
The Senators overcame losses in sets one and three to force a 1-1 tie and then a 2-2 tie to send the match to a winner-take-all fifth set.
Davis & Elkins withstood a battle from Cedarville in the second set, winning the longest set of the year for the Senators, 33-31.
In set four, the Senators again withstood a push from Cedarville, to win 25-22.
However, the Senators fell short in the fifth set as the four-time G-MAC Champions claimed their fifth title with a 15-8 victory over Davis & Elkins.
Sasha Johnson had a big night for D&E, leading all scorers in the match with 22.5 points. Johnson had 18 kills to go along with three aces and three block assists.
Devin Saucy,
Elizabeth Estes and
Anna Gallup also were in double figures in kills, recording 13, 12 and 11, respectively.
Saucy and
Kelly Smith also chipped in with two service aces each.
Defensively up front, Saucy had a solo block and two assisted blocks. Estes and
Raleigh Weaver each had two assisted blocks as well.
On the back line, five Senators recorded double-digit digs.
Michaela Touchet led the way with 17, while Smith finished with 15.
Zoe Craig,
Kendall Jacobson and Saucy recorded 13, 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Craig also had the majority of the Senators assists, recording 50 in the match, one shy of her season high.
The loss brings the Senators season to a close. D&E finished the year as the G-MAC Black Division Champions and as a No. 1 seed in the G-MAC Tournament, along with Cedarville.
