PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Davis & Elkins College Women's Basketball team officially started the 2016-17 season on Friday night with a 78-76 win over Tiffin University in the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover Classic at Lake Erie College.
The Senators jumped out to a 7-point lead after three quarters of play and held on late for the victory, despite 29 points in the fourth quarter by the Dragons.
Tiffin was able to take the lead with 1:32 remaining, but
Sydney Turner hit a three to put the Senators back in front.
Jay Kilpatrick followed it up with four free throws to seal the victory.
Stephanie Wooten led the Senators with a double-double, scoring 23 points while racking up 10 rebounds. Both marks were team highs for the Senators.
Wooten also led the team with six assists on the night.
Turner,
Kali Wilburn and Kilpatrick joined Wooten in double figures. Turner and Wilburn scored 18 and 12 points, respectively. Kilpatrick came off the bench to score 10 for the Senators.
The Senators were outshot in the game, hitting 42.2 percent of their shots, while Tiffin shot 46.4 percent from the floor. D&E also hit just 39.3 percent from behind the arc, while the Dragons were at a 53.8.
Davis & Elkins also struggles at the line, hitting just 59.1 percent of its free throws.
However, the Senators out-rebounded Tiffin 44-29, finishing with 15 second-chance points while also holding Tiffin to just two.
The Senators will return to action tomorrow when they take on the hosts, Lake Erie, at 2 p.m.
