ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Soccer team capped off senior night with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Malone Wednesday night.
 
In the perfect senior night script, senior Lukas Grosse-Puppendahl scored a free kick from just outside the penalty box to win the game for the Senators with the golden goal.
 
The win for D&E secures that the Senators advance straight to the semifinal round of the G-MAC Tournament, bypassing the play in game as one of the top two seeds.
 
Fellow senior Benjamin Pastur started the night off with the opening goal of the game in the 16th minute. Tim Staerz had an effort knocked out by the keeper and Pastur was able to hit it home to give the Senators the lead.
 
Late in regulation, the Senators fell back into a tie as Caleb Griffith scored after a corner kick, beating rookie keeper Everton Carvalho, who made his first start as a Senator.
 
The Senators outshot Malone 31-10 in the match. D&E had the only two shots in the first overtime, forcing Malone into a pair of saves that would lead to the second extra-time period.
 
However, the second overtime was tight, with Malone having three shots, including one off the crossbar. D&E had six shots in the second overtime, with the last being set up just outside the penalty area where Grosse-Puppendahl set up for the spot kick.
 
The Senators will return to action on Saturday with a trip to Murfreesboro, North Carolina to face Chowan University. The match is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
