ELKINS – The Davis & Elkins College Men's Soccer team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 3-1 on Saturday at Nuttall Field in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.
It took a while for the Senators to get going in the contest, but the hosts finally broke through a tough defensive setup from Kentucky Wesleyan in the 41st minute with a goal from
Wes Hendrix.
Friedrich Peter played a ball ahead to
Ross Stewart, who found Hendrix in the middle of the penalty area and was able to beat Grant Allen for the opening goal of the match and his first of the season.
The Senators would go into the half with the 1-0 lead, and it would stay a one-goal game for nearly 30 minutes of the second half.
Tim Staerz would double the D&E lead in the 74th minute. The striker took a pass from
Lukas Grosse-Puppendahl and beat Allen for his fourth goal of the season.
The two-goal advantage would not last long however, as the visitors answered back to cut the deficit in half just five minutes later with a goal from John Landry.
With the game tight over the next several minutes,
Pablo Salvador Lopez secured the victory for the Senators with a goal on the 86th minute.
Benjamin Pastur's ball came to Lopez just in front of the 6-yard box and Lopez calmly finished as he tallied his third goal of the campaign and iced the victory for D&E on homecoming.
The Senators will return to action on Wednesday, as they play Malone at Nuttall Field in another G-MAC battle. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
