MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Davis & Elkins College men's and women's tennis teams each claimed victories on the road Wednesday, continuing a strong start to the spring season.
The women's team pulled off a 4-2 win over Chowan University in D2 Mountain East Conference play. The Senators dominated doubles at the top, as Liebe Oosthuizen and Erin Laubscher defeated Lerma Murillo and Vera 6-3, while Lilly Wentzler and Fabienne Lahn won 6-4. Laubscher was instrumental in singles, winning a nail-biting 7-6, 7-6 match at No. 4, and Emiliana Golac Poppe added a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5. Maddie Frazier secured the final point for D&E in a super tiebreak 6-0, 4-6, 10-6.
On the men's side, the Senators earned a tight 4-3 victory, with singles deciding the outcome. Simon Kiekbeld and Tom Strohschein delivered a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and Santiago Ordonez sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles. Justus Petersilie battled through a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles, helping swing the overall result in D&E's favor.
Davis & Elkins now turn their attention home, hosting Millersville University at 11 a.m. Monday at the D&E Tennis Complex. Both teams look to carry momentum from their road wins into the upcoming week.
